About Gatwick Airport
Gatwick was originally known as the Manor of Gatwick and was owned by the De Gatwick's. It was not until 1890 that the area where the airport now lies was purchased by the Gatwick Race Course which opened in 1891. The land alongside the race course was purchased and used as a small aerodrome, licensed in August 1930. In 1936, The Beehive was opened which was the worlds first circular terminal and in May of that year the first schedule flight to Paris departed costing four pounds and 5 shillings.
During the Second World War, Gatwick was extended by requisitioning part of the race course. It was then decommissioned after the war but was retained and operated for civilian use. In 1952 the Govenrment gave approval for the development of Gatwoc as an alternative to Heathrow Airport.
