About Heathrow Airport
Heathrow Airport opened in 1929 as a small airfield originally known as the Great West Aerodrome. In 1944 major development in the Heathrow area turned the airfield into a much larger airport to service long distance military aircraft. By the time the airfield was complete, World War II had ended and it became a civil airport, opening up as London Airport in 1946. It was renamed Heathrow Airport in 1966.
