About Reading

Today, Reading is a major commercial hub and is ranked as the UK’s top economic area for economic success and well being. It is home to the highly regarded University of Reading and hosts one of the UK’s largest music festivals every year - the Reading Festival.

Ruins of Reading Abbey

Reading was originally a Saxon settlement known as Reada ingas dating back to the 8th century. Readings’ earliest known written record in history is the unsuccessful attempt by Alfred the Great, to defeat the Danes who had invaded in 870.

Reading Abbey was founded by Henry 1 in 1121 and this is where his remains are buried. The Abbey was largely destroyed in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Abbey has recently undergone a large conservation project and has re-opened to the public and now includes the new gallery Reading Museum and has an extensive activity programme.
