About Luton Airport
Luton Airport was originally opened in July 1938 and during World War II, was a base for Royal Air Force fighters. Following the war, the land was returned to the local council who continued to use the airport as a commercial operation.
Charter airlines began operating out of Luton during the 1960’s, including Euravia, which is now part of TUI Airways and in 1972 the airport was the most profitable airport in the country. During the 1980’s Luton airport saw it’s customer numbers decline, partly due to the growth of Stansted. In 1990 the decision was made to rename it to London Luton Airport to emphasise it’s proximity to the capital. Following large investment into the airport, a new terminal was opened in November 1999.
Luton Airport Today
Sine the 2000’s Luton airport changed ownership and has seen flight operators come and go. Luton has withstood the test of the economic climate to now being the fifth busiest airport in the UK with over 16.5million passengers passing through and continues to serve as a base for EasyJet, Ryanair and TUI Airways.
