About Stansted Airport
The original runway was built by the US Air Force in 1942 and on D Day bombers from Stansted led over 600 aircraft over the beaches of occupied France. The British Airports Authority took over the site in 1966 and a new terminal was soon completed to handle the increasing number of flight passengers.
In 1991 The Queen opened the newly developed Stansted which increased the airports capacity from two to eight million flight passengers a year.
