Travel advice for United Kingdom – London

  • Heathrow and Gatwick are the two major international airports that service the U.K., and most visitors flying in to the country will likely find themselves at one of the two. Non-EU passport holders may take longer to clear immigration, particularly at Heathrow. During busy periods during the summer (July to August) and peak hours (mornings and evenings), wait times can be significantly longer, especially at Heathrow which is one of the world’s busiest airports.

  • Departure: visitors departing from either Heathrow or Gatwick should note that both airports have multiple terminals. It is important that you know which terminal your airline departs from, to avoid a last minute dash to the correct terminal. Travellers should be aware that both Heathrow and Gatwick are located some distance away from the centre of London. Departing passengers must allocate enough travel time to reach the airport, and take into account traffic and public transport delays.

  • The threat of crime is generally low, and a majority of visitors should have no trouble at all. It is best to take sensible precautions, such as trying not to travel late at night and avoiding areas that may be unsafe. Pickpockets and bag snatchers do operate in tourist areas and on public transport.
